ANZAC day is a day we pay respect to our fallen men and woman who have risked lives in keeping this country free. When it comes to ANZAC day I make sure I attend my local ceremony, be it the dawn service or the 11am march. You see my father was in the Navy, my grandad served in WW2 and my brother has recently been accepted into the Air Force, I always hold my head up with pride and make sure I pay huge respect to the diggers and their families in the parade, also to the service men and women of today.
However....
What gets my goat is, after the ceremony the service men and women of today head off to the local watering hole to continue a long tradition of saluting the fallen with a drink or 10, or more. This is fine as it is what us Australian's do! even death is celebrated by getting drunk. However when walking through Fremantle on Saturday I couldn't believe my eyes to see 12 or more navy men walking the street (in uniform) staggering around and calling themselves and others, c*nts and fags and carrying on like teenagers at a party. I was astonished that they are meant to be representing Australia as our protectors and they are allowed to act like this in public and on all days ANZAC day, I was disgusted.
If you want to get excessively drunk and behave like that, at least remove your uniform boys. My father hangs his head in shame when he see's the Navy men of today acting like fools especially on ANZAC day. It is all about respect and I think a lot of them need to be taught it. I worry about their behaviour at the best of times and now I am just astonished.
I know it is not all Navy people that act like this and this was a small minority it is just a shame they let a whole lot of people down. I did see a few in the streets helping out the buskers shows and being quite pleasant to everyone. Well done boys! show them what it is all about.
